The operation begins when the boiler's burner ignites the oil, creating a high-temperature flame inside the combustion chamber. This chamber is essentially the first part of the primary heat exchanger. The heat energy radiates and convects onto the walls of the heat exchanger, which are in direct contact with the water. In a typical cast iron heat exchanger, the water passages are intricately designed to maximize the surface area exposed to the heat, ensuring efficient transfer. As the water absorbs the heat, its temperature rises rapidly, and it is then pumped away to the heating circuit. In modern condensing oil boilers, the system is even more efficient. The primary heat exchanger extracts the initial 'sensible' heat, but the hot exhaust gases (flue gases), which would otherwise be wasted up the flue, are then channeled through a secondary condensing heat exchanger. This secondary unit is designed to cool the gases to a point where the water vapor within them condenses back into a liquid, releasing a significant amount of 'latent' heat. This recovered heat is transferred to the cooler water returning from the system, pre-warming it before it enters the primary heat exchanger. The materials used are chosen for their resistance to the corrosive condensate produced; aluminum and high-grade stainless steel are prevalent for their longevity under acidic conditions.
