‌Understanding ISO 15547-1 for Plate Heat Exchangers

ISO 15547-1:2005 specifies requirements for plate-and-frame heat exchangers in petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas services—covering mechanical design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing, and shipment. It applies to gasketed, semi-welded, and welded PHEs.

Area

What to Specify

Design conditions

Design/MAWP, min/max design temperature, corrosion allowance

Materials

Plate alloy, gasket elastomer, frame/coating

Inspection & testing

Hydrotest basis, visual/NDE as applicable, documentation pack

Deliverables

Drawings, nameplate data, MTRs, test certificates (per ISO 15547-1 clauses)

Who needs it

EPCs, owners, and OEMs when projects reference ISO frameworks or when international specifications require ISO language for PHE procurement.

Why it matters

Using ISO terminology in RFQs/datasheets reduces ambiguity, aligns QA/ITP expectations, and simplifies factory/site acceptance.

FAQ

Is ISO 15547-1 interchangeable with API 662 Part 1?

In practice they’re closely aligned; many purchasers accept either if the project spec permits. Always follow contract language.
